About Me - my art, and my in-class teaching and online tutorials

Q. When did you first start drawing and painting, Suzanne?

S.  It’s too far back to remember, but certainly it was a passion from my very early years. There are comments on school reports from the age of seven that it was my best subject!

Q. Did you get  qualifications in art?

S. I passed ‘O’ level with a grade 1. ‘A’ level and suffered almost two years at art school!

Q.  Suffered?

S. Yes – I was in my 40’s by the time I decided to go – although I had been painting and drawing all my life. I was the only student who could draw! I left in my second year after telling them I had better things to do. Now as a teacher myself I try to persuade all my students to spend some time learning the basics of drawing before moving on to painting. You need the building blocks, and it’s really not so hard.

Q.  How long have you been teaching in Spain?

S.  About 15 years in and around the Quesada area. The classes are fun and friendly and we often have lunch afterwards too!

Q.  What is you favourite subject to paint?

S. An old friend now in New Zealand sent me a photo of a flamenco dancer I did for her mother when I was about 16. No idea where I got the reference photo from – no internet in those days, but I’ve loved painting the beautiful dresses, and trying to capture the duende ever since. I also love to paint portraits and animals, and I get quite a lot of commissions for both.

Q. Where do you sell your work?

S. I’m very fortunate, living as  we do on the Costa  Blanca, to have  the use of a beautiful Spanish Restaurant in Los Montesinos as my ‘Gallery.’ My paintings are all round the walls and replaced as they sell, as well as fine art prints which fly out! But both original paintings and prints also sell on ETSY and have gone all around the world to many places including Australia, the USA and several European countries.

Q.  Do you agree that painting and drawing are good for the soul?

S.  Definitely. They don’t call it art therapy for nothing. Many of my students over the years have had health challenges – but art class is often the day of the week that isn’t all about cancer, arthritis, MS, depression and other illnesses. So many class members are now excellent artists, and some are selling their own work. You never know what you can do till you try!
